An early view of Clare of around 1860, showing the Castle before the railway destryed its integrity by cutting through the edge and placiing the station within the bailey. Note how few trees there were in the valley, and how carefully managed the landscape was. (1000 x 554)

It isn't known for certain why Gosford street was renamed to Callis street, though both names were current for a while. It could be a corruption of 'Calais', or perhaps of 'Chalice' (1620 x 1014)

There are, confusingly, two Chilton Halls in Suffolk: one is near Sudbury, and the other near Clare. It is an impressive building with what must have once been extensive grounds. (3216 x 2040)
Chilton Chapel seems to be a house built in 1550 within the abandoned remains of a wayside chapel of monastic origin, the Chapel of St Mary Magdalene, built circa 1190. (423 x 315)
This building hides the remains of a chapel dating from the twelveth century chapel of 'Blessed Mary Magdelene'. a C12 doorway and C13 pointed arch survive on north side. Remains of windows upstairs. (631 x 494)

Nethergate House c1920 An early C16 timber-framed and plastered house with a centre block - and slightly lower side wings with exposed timber framing and jettied upper storeys. It was owned by several generations of a wealthy clothiers family named Crosse and was extensively altered by Francis Crosse in 1644. (3130 x 2234)
